Foreign thoughts from home

Oh, to be in Panama now that November is here! As the days get shorter and the nights get longer I find myself thanking more and more of my summer trip to Central America, poring over the piccies, longing for the light, the heat and the sun. Yes, I have my New Year skiing trip coming up, something to look forward to, but I’m longing for a spot of simple uncomplicated hedonism, doing nothing but lazing by a cold pool with cool friends under a hot summer sky. Sigh!

The thing is I’m not that keen on sun-bathing as such, it’s bad for the complexion, that’s true, but I get bored so easily; I need to be talking and acting. But there are times when simply being is enough, simply being in a place like Panama, wonderful country, wonderful people, wonderful times. I would so like to go back, to explore some of the outlying regions, perhaps even to probe as far as the Darien Gap within sight of Colombia or the outlying tribal islands. The thing is I’ve always been adventurous to the point of being reckless!

But now, right now, I’m dreaming of my hotel in Panama City, I’m dreaming of sitting by the pool, I’m dreaming of having fun, I’m dreaming of Jose and Carmen; Jorge and Neorka, Bill and Pam, Stu and Jerri; I’m dreaming of times gone by.

  10. A man, a plan, a canal: Panama.

Howler monkeys, hornbills, arrow poison frogs, mosquitoes, fishing bats, pirates, Aztec treasure . . . how on earth do you find time to sit by the pool? Of course, at your age you are going to live forever . . .
