The only thing is that Rome, by the time of Hadrian, had come to see that their were definite limits to empire, that further expansion carried all sorts of political and strategic dangers. Bush and Blair, those modern emperors, had not the wit to see the potential long term damage their imperial adventure would entail. It proves that Iraq is a state, but not a nation -- the country is divided in three or four peoples, like the Balkan. Of course, the West could have known that before the invasion.

I remember Clausewitz from when I was around 14 years old. You have effectively employed the services of Clausewitz and Tacitus but History will testify that humans never learn from History. The most disturbing of these photographs is the one where two kids are holding guns to the skull of a distraught one. Signs of the times to come. I am not quiet a fan of Cormac McCarthy's The Road but guess that is where we are headed to. umashankarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04940072093576263799noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4413130168723738166.post-76149730547772215662013-02-22T08:26:35.945-08:002013-02-22T08:26:35.945-08:00I believe the West is in the twilight of it's ...I believe the West is in the twilight of it's existence. It's leaders are following paths that are crippling their societies economically, socially, politically and militarily. Not exactly the best time to take actions that destabilises areas in the rest of the world or to make more enemies. Western arrogances of the past seem very likely to be close to pay back time. The next generation or maybe sooner may see a new dawn that sweeps away much of Western standards and values and replaces them with standards and values that the West discarded many generations ago. A modern day version of the dark ages. I hope my assessment is wrong but it will only be if our leaders wake up to the ill advised policies and practices that they currently employ and change tack. A forlorn hope me thinks. Why do you think that modern wars are artificially prolonged? because they are profitable to certain interests, a percentage of loss even of your own resources and personal is acceptable if gains outweigh losses. Just like Rome sending out it's Legions to subjugate other peoples for control of resources, commerce or subjects to levy taxation on. The gears of the war machine are lubricated by the blood of the casualties of war and cares not whose but better theirs than yours.anthonyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02931330128135957439noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4413130168723738166.post-57967405632205920962013-02-21T16:43:47.329-08:002013-02-21T16:43:47.329-08:00I'm not sure the war on Iraq and Afghanistan h...I'm not sure the war on Iraq and Afghanistan has failed.
