For example, I had not realized that Gerda was a metaphor for a third Empire. Obviously, you would not want to mention everything in thing the book but I was fascinated by an account of Rebecca West meeting an old Serbian woman. A tale which focused on the life of one person and expanded into saying something more about a whole country; past and future. Microcosm into Macrocosm. And, the portents, even in 1938, were not good. West foresaw the beak up of Yugoslavia - some say. In 2006 I visited Croatia and Bosnia. I visited Sarajevo. I stood on the re-built bridge at Mostar. I met a Muslim who showed me a Mosque and talked of its history. I had coffee and played chess with another. I listened to their accounts also. Finally, I went to Dubrovnik where I chanced upon BLGF.

The Kosovo curse:

"Whoever is a Serb and of Serb birth
And of Serb blood and heritage
And comes not to the Battle of Kosovo,
May he never have the progeny his heart desires!
Neither son nor daughter
May nothing grow that his hand sows!
Neither dark wine nor white wheat"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GazimestanNobbyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16329815721904353534noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4413130168723738166.post-54557435472902834152010-05-31T23:24:55.084-07:002010-05-31T23:24:55.084-07:00I enjoy reading reviews.
