As an Ahmadi Muslim I could not help but be reminded of how our organisational system was based upon that of the papacy. The Holy Founder of the Ahmadiyya Community had the revelation from God on 7 May 1906 'The prescription of the strength of the Church.' (Tadhkirah. Islam International Publications, 1976, revised 2009. 821). The Caliphs are elected in the same way as well in a conclave. As a friend observed to me "We're going down the same road. We're the New Roman Catholic Church." Basically, it's the Islamic version of the same thing, following on from the Muhammadan Messiah rather than the Judaic one.Rehan Qayoomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02391797858691917631noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4413130168723738166.post-73307571026237236132010-09-20T16:15:01.564-07:002010-09-20T16:15:01.564-07:00Ah, Anthony, my brother, now I know where you are ...Ah, Anthony, my brother, now I know where you are coming from! But anyway, I'm sure this will be discussed more later....Dominichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00145734042272196687noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4413130168723738166.post-4412743622207511322010-09-20T01:41:32.166-07:002010-09-20T01:41:32.166-07:00Dominic, I so agree with that comment from the Cat...Dominic, I so agree with that comment from the Catholic Herald. I think Tatchell sees himself as some kind of gay messiah, always on the look out for possible opportunities for martyrdom!Anastasia F-Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01284602529524462457noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4413130168723738166.post-6221872330922396132010-09-20T01:23:38.513-07:002010-09-20T01:23:38.513-07:00Ana,

(and maybe I should save this comment until then, but...)

I fail to understand why Tatchell gets such a free ride from the media (oh in certain ways he has a degree of courage as regards his willingness to put himself in harm's way, such as when he was attacked in Moscow, I will grant him that). Even I had been prepared to believe that he had sufficient integrity to research his TV "documentary" on the pope with rigour. Before the event, anyway. But seemingly not.

I just this week (in the Catholic Herald? I'll have to dig out the reference to see whose insight this was) found a description of him as something like "not a human rights activist, but an energetic crank who seeks to reduce all events of history to aspects of gay sex", which seems, more or less, right: trivialising, vulgarising and profoundly damaging to any cause associated with genuine human rights.

But anyway, that is for later discussion. This is another fabulous post.

(Although of less overwhelming import than the symbolism of Benedict speaking in Westminster Hall, etc, also astounding to me was the extraordinarily enthuisastic and generous way that Benedict was welcomed in Scotland, and by a Scottish Nationalist Government at that)Dominichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00145734042272196687noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4413130168723738166.post-15951588071645419492010-09-20T01:13:21.703-07:002010-09-20T01:13:21.703-07:00Thanks, Brendano. :-)Thanks, Brendano. :-)Anastasia F-Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01284602529524462457noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4413130168723738166.post-15803940553093005012010-09-20T01:12:55.518-07:002010-09-20T01:12:55.518-07:00Harry, it's complicated. In Britain itself community tensions are largely a thing ofthe past, even in places like Glasgow and Liverpool, where they used to be quite pronounced. Besides, even in these places, it was more about 'tribal' loyalties rather than religious differences as such.Anastasia F-Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01284602529524462457noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4413130168723738166.post-36076215464088951782010-09-20T00:41:36.827-07:002010-09-20T00:41:36.827-07:00Excellent post ... thank you.Excellent post ... thank you.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4413130168723738166.post-48814576970947599842010-09-19T23:48:10.205-07:002010-09-19T23:48:10.205-07:00Hi Ana,
