The over riding impression I got was that Europe, especially Holland, was on the cusp of a great social change. The Reformation was coming; in with the new church and out with the old. And the remnants of the Old pagan beliefs were still around, with many superstitions and magic and witchcraft. And the paintings of Bosch involved all these things.Michael J McCormickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15420031175369432868noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4413130168723738166.post-34163873414297611472011-07-06T18:19:16.361-07:002011-07-06T18:19:16.361-07:00Very interesting, consider how early he lived. I do not know this painter but some of his painting I did encountered somewhere.
"The two men could not be further apart - Grosz the left-wing chronicler of Germany after the First World War; Bosch a Christian pessimist troubled by the apparent ascendency of evil, a theme he touches on time after time. Gentle Jesus is in the centre. And we see the hell scenes in his other works and so on as allegorical but for him they were more than that. I know he's later but Bruegel decentred the mythic figures. His take on the fall of Icarus is wonderful but I love even more the simple realism of The Hunters in the Snow.Mark Englishhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03506844097173520312noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4413130168723738166.post-86069057531874474812011-07-05T23:14:42.194-07:002011-07-05T23:14:42.194-07:00My screen saver varies, but often it's often t...My screen saver varies, but often it's often the Garden of Earthly Delights. In 1961 I was a VERY young RAF sgt in Singapore and I wrote to the arts correspondent of The Times in London asking him for some background on Bosch (very pre-Google days). He sent me a book analysing the meaning of the painting. Many years later I spent happy hours sat in front of one of the, I think, 4 originals. My own favourite Bosch painting is the collosal 'The Garden of Earthly Delights' (1504)an aesthetical adynaton as in Heaney's chestnust tree, understanding another time outside and beyond time.Rehan Qayoomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02391797858691917631noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4413130168723738166.post-55216783359528283732011-07-05T18:35:03.222-07:002011-07-05T18:35:03.222-07:00Bosch is a most interesting painter - both for the...Bosch is a most interesting painter - both for the details of mediaeval Low Country costume and vernacular life that can be found in his work, and for his almost psychedelic apocalyptic paintings which are part of a tradition of representations of horror/paradise that was almost completely replaced by the Renaissance styles that came out of Italy in the 16thC.

Something happened to the psyche of devout believers about the time Columbus brought back news of a New World. It seems to have fired a new zealotry that expressed itself both in the Protestant Reformation and in vigorous execution of devotionary works by those who remained committed to the Roman Catholic tradition.

Have you seen the documentary by Waldemar Januszcak: 'The Michelangelo Code: Secrets of the Sistine Chapel'?

His contention seems to be that Julius II was convinced the discovery of the Americas represented a fulfillment of prophecy signifying the imminent return of Jesus, and he wanted to be sure he and his family would be among the first to be awarded celestial brownie points.
