Okay, enough o' that. I've seen so many of these Norman yarns over the years that I could probably present one myself, running north first to bash Harald Hardrada, of course (Stamford Bridge?) then ranting from the wrecked parapets of Battle Abbey. I don't know why the BBC keeps making them..they did their best efforts on the subject decades ago. The book The Norman Achievement by Richard F. Cassady (1989)is much better fare.

I feel guilty about these wars because the vanquished ones were just as entitled to their peace and quiet as anyone. Quite a few of my ancestors must have been on the Saxon side and ended up vassals in their own land. Why guilty? Well without all this warmongering and massacring England never would have set on the path that led to an intercontinental Empire. This island would now belong to the Malays or Arabs or Indians or (horror!) the French! King William, thank you for the glorious Commonwealth of Australia.Retariushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09165689727557860449noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4413130168723738166.post-88450171182852446322010-08-22T19:08:27.412-07:002010-08-22T19:08:27.412-07:00Michael, how wonderful; what an experience that mu...Michael, how wonderful; what an experience that must have been. Yes, it is an amazing story, the whole Norman saga, from Ireland all the way to Antioch; from Strongbow to BohemondAnastasia F-Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01284602529524462457noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4413130168723738166.post-58978209659374916792010-08-22T18:58:55.735-07:002010-08-22T18:58:55.735-07:00Ana, of course I knew from your name and bold char...Ana, of course I knew from your name and bold character that you are Norman. I had the pleasure of meeting James Villiers-Stuart in 1998 at his home, Dromana House, on the Blackwater River in Waterford. He has since passed away, but I will always remember his hospitality. He was a Fitzgerald and he told us stories of the Geraldines and their historic connections; their triumphs and catastrophes. The ancient armor was on the walls and his library was filled with treasures.

It is quite amazing that a few hundred Normans were able to conquer as much of Ireland as they desired. A big part of it was the technical advantage of the armored knight on an armor-shielded horse and a big part was the courage, intelligence, resourcefulness, and boldness of the men from the North.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4413130168723738166.post-72557417051981919172010-08-22T15:20:30.448-07:002010-08-22T15:20:30.448-07:00Thank you, Michael. I would love to know your identity there, only if you don't mind telling me of course. I would not publish if you prefer to keep it secret.

OK, on Portugal and the Moriscos the honest answer is that I do not know and there is no point in speculating. I've had a look at the books I have both on the Inquisition and Spanish history (I have nothing on Portugal) and they are not at all helpful. I can only say that since Portugal fell under the control of the Spanish crown in 1580 I don't see how the Moriscos there could have escaped the expulsion edict, but that is speculation on my part. If I come across anything more specific I will certainly let you know. If you want to leave me your email address - again I won't publish -or mail me on Clio the Muse.Anastasia F-Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01284602529524462457noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4413130168723738166.post-69890667736728137312010-08-22T08:07:23.942-07:002010-08-22T08:07:23.942-07:00It's very kind of you to say so, RCP.It's very kind of you to say so, RCP.Anastasia F-Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01284602529524462457noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4413130168723738166.post-79786105851235310592010-08-22T08:06:00.417-07:002010-08-22T08:06:00.417-07:00Thank you, Adam.Thank you, Adam.Anastasia F-Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01284602529524462457noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4413130168723738166.post-63686266124401824922010-08-22T06:42:44.774-07:002010-08-22T06:42:44.774-07:00This comment has been removed by the author.Duothttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02106894648978399181noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4413130168723738166.post-46818667154035624892010-08-22T02:10:06.695-07:002010-08-22T02:10:06.695-07:00You are in top form, Ana, the brightest light in t...You are in top form, Ana, the brightest light in the internet.
